לפניך INSIGHTS

ENGLISH

The word לפניך, wherever we see it, in Torah and Tefillah serves to remind us of what is of major importance. That we are always in the presence of Hashem.

It can be said, that one of the reasons we recite 100 blessing daily, is in order for us to remind ourselves constantly throughout the day, that we live in Hashem's world. Nothing is ours. Everything we have belongs to Hashem.

Needing to recite a blessing before we eat, forces us to be cognizant of Hashem's presence.

1

THREE LEVELS OF לפניך

AWARENESS: The Consious Level

When a Jew is usually aware of Hashem's presence, it is difficult for him to totally ignore His will. He might perform some or all of the Torah's requirements, but only because he feels they are mandatory. He does what he does, out of necessity, not so willingly. Sometimes only periodically without solid commitment, doing the bear minimum.

KNOWING: Motovational Level

When a Jew knows he is always in Hashem’s presence, he is motivated to do Hashem’s will. Still may perform a little sluggishly and at times may need a push, but overall does what he is supposed to do consistently.

Knowing is definitely more than just being aware.

FEELING: Want To Do Level

When a Jew feels Hashem's presence everywhere, all the time, he wants to do Hashem's will. He does so with zest, excitement and enthusiasm. He doesn't do because he has to. He doesn't need motovation to do. He sees every Mitzvah and Prayer as an opportunity and privilege to serve his Master Creator. He wants to do and looks forward to doing His will. Wants to make Hashem proud of him. Feeling is definitely more than knowing.

How can one become a לפניך Jew, living a לפניך life?

Before doing anything, think or say to yourself these words.

"I am aware that I stand in your presence 'ה and it is my honor and privilege to serve you". Just saying these words will help one create a closeness and attachment to Hashem.

3

לפניך, Wherever I turn I am in Hashem's Presence.

He is right there before me.

There is no escape "מלא כל הארץ כבודו"‎‎

He is where I am all the time.

He is there wherever I go.

He is everywhere, even where I vacation.

If only I could live with this reality in mind.

שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד‎‎

4

The Holy word לפניך in all its variations לפני, פניו ,פניך,לפניו throughout Torah, serves as a reminder, that its all about being cognizant of Hashem's Presence and that we are always in Hashem’s Presence.

Therefore we need to take great care, to take Hashem into consideration all the time in all our comings and goings wherever we are. Not to ignore the mission He has established for His people, or to violate His wishes.

5

The significance of לפניך can be appreciated by the mere fact that it's root word is repeated so many times and in so many different ways throughout Torah. No doubt it is to highlight purpose and give us a clear picture of what Hashem really wants from us as a first priority. Hashem is not interested in the Jewish People just going through the motions. He seeks our connection, our closeness, our true devotion, hearth and soul. לפניך reminds us that it is all about HIM.

6

Since the Torah felt it was necessary to repeat the words "לפני ה" time and time again in many areas of Torah, it can be deduced, that it was to teach us the importance of being focused on Hashem. To be aware that we are always in front of HIM and that HIS Presence surrounds us. Without that awareness we miss the key component to performing a Mitzvah. The main purpose is to ultimately have us connect and come close to Hashem through its performance. This comes through dedicated precise performance and behavior, per Hashem’s instructions.

We totally surrender our will.

We make His will our will,

by perceiving we are in HIS midst, a presence we dare not ignore.

דע לפני מי אתה עומד, לפני מלך מלכי המלכים הקדוש ברוך הוא

7

During our recital of the אשר יצר blessing we say the words

"אי אפשר להתקיים ולעמוד לפניך"

"It would be impossible to survive and STAND BEFORE YOU".

It would seem that these words ולעמוד לפניך are superfluous considering the entire text, which is understandable without it.

Perhaps these words hint to us an underlying reason why sometimes it is difficult for us to stand in one place while saying this blessing.

Were we truly cognizant of Hashem's Presence at the time and that we are actually BEFORE HIM, we would stop and stand in one place while saying the blessing. No doubt it would enhance our concentration and understanding of the blessing and appreciation of the miracle that Hashem just performed for us.

"אפשר להתקיים ולעמוד". It is possible to survive and stand in one place while reciting the blessing,

"לפניך" if we stop to be aware of Hashem’s Presence and live a לפניך life.

8

Whenever we see the word לפניך or any of its variations in a posuk or prayer, the subject matter is generally understandable without it. So why is it there?

Either for the purpose of letting us know that it should happen, did happen, will happen, in the merit of לפניך living, awareness of Hashems Presence; or Heaven forbid it happened or will happen because of the sin of not being aware of Hashem's Presence.

9

"אבינו מלכנו חטאנו, לפניך"

Our Father, Our King, we sinned, BEFORE YOU.

The prayer is clearly understood without the word לפניך. So why is it there?

To teach us that greater then the actual sin we did was the sin of לפניך,

we weren't aware of Hashem’s Presence. That was and is the primary cause of all sin.

That is why on Yom Kippur we end every אל חטא prayer with the word לפניך.

It's to remind us about the cause and result.

10

In the שמונה עשרה prayer we say "החזירנו בתשובה שלמה לפניך"

"Influence us to return in complete repentance  BEFORE YOU"

Why is it inadequate to say the prayer without the word לפניך?

Aren't we speaking to Hashem and standing BEFORE HIM in prayer?

HE understands that we are asking Him to help us repent.

That we are BEFORE HIM is quite obvious without having to verbalize it.

What we are asking Hashem for is, that besides pardoning us for the sins we did against HIS will, HE should also pardon us for insulting HIM by not being aware of his presence at the time that we sinned BEFORE HIM.

There is a big difference between sinning in front of as opposed to sinning not in front of.

We are always IN FRONT OF and BEFORE HASHEM.

11

The Holy word לפניך carries a hidden message,

which is of major significance to every Jew.

When understood properly and applied to our daily lives regularly,

it can be a powerful tool in advancing connection and closeness to Hashem, while at the same time helping distance us from wrongdoing.  A human being was created with the attribute of shame. By nature a person will avoid messing up publicly, making every effort to avoid mistakes in front of others. Maintaining our social status and reputation are important to us.

No one wants to be shamed. What about maintaining our status
and reputation with Hashem?

Shouldn't we be even more ashamed to error IN FRONT OF HASHEM, who sees everything we do? Doesn't it stand to reason, that we must always make sure to fulfill our obligations in accordance with HIS WILL, BEFORE HIM?

Hashem can become more real in our lives,

by constantly keeping the word לפניך in our minds and consciousness.  The word לפניך can serve as an automatic braking system.  It can cause us to stop and think more, before passing a Torah red light.  To slow down and be more mindful,

since Hashem is right here, right now.  By considering His Presence, we will watch our actions  more carefully before proceeding.  To violate the King's Presence, while in the throne room  and to sin right BEFORE HIM, FACE TO FACE, should be unthinkable.  לפניך is a spiritual red alert system that can help everyone  safely navigate the stormy oceans and challenges we face today as a nation.  Just need to think about this one word all the time, לפניך.  Wherever I go, I am לפניך IN YOUR PRESENCE, BEFORE YOU .

12

Why do we thank הקב"ה for our ability to evacuate, in the blessing of אשר יצר?

We thank Him for changing our situation of אי אפשר להתקיים ולעמוד, of not being able to exist and stand לפניך, BEFORE HIM, to אפשר להתקיים, where its possible for us to exist, for the sole purpose of ולעמוד לפניך to be able to STAND IN SERVICE, BEFORE HIM.

This נוסח may be based on the Commandment to remember the day we STOOD BEFORE HASHEM at Choreiv

"והודעתם לבניך ולבני בניך יום אשר עמדת לפני ה' אלקך בחרב"

WE ARE ALWAYS STANDING IN THE PRESENCE OF HASHEM
